Action, Adventure and Romance in the Yorkshire Dales

In a 2013 Lonely Planet poll, Yorkshire was voted the third best holiday destination, not just in the county but in the world. Unsurprisingly, Yorkshire born and bred residents were feeling pretty happy about their homeland. So although there’s no need to persuade you that Yorkshire is a brilliant place to visit, there’s no harm celebrating it a bit, is there? I thought not. Let’s start our celebration of all things Yorkshire with the Yorkshire Dales.

When you think of the Yorkshire Dales it’s easy to conjure images of green rolling hills and the occasional sheep. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a dedicated area of outstanding natural beauty and the towns and villages surrounding the national park are a fabulous getaway for walkers, cyclists, sight-seeing tourists or those looking for a quiet romantic break.

Calling Walkers, Ramblers and Cyclists

If you can’t sit still, a Yorkshire Dales holiday is just the ticket. There is a plethora of outdoor action going on for you, especially if you love walking and cycling. There is a fantastic connection of footpaths for you to step or roll down, all with unbeatable views.

Bring your wellies or boots if you’re walking, while blessed with stunning scenery, Yorkshire isn’t always graced with stunning weather. (But hey, that’s what keeps it green). If you’re really up for a workout, you can do the three peaks Yorkshire Challenge. While you’re in the area a little donation to support the National Park conservation is a great way to show your appreciation. (And you get a cool T-shirt too).

Attractions  in the Dales

Don’t forget to pack your camera, you’ll need it in this fantastic region. Natural attractions include local wildlife, rolling countryside and natural wonders like Malham Cove, the famous limestone cliff just North of Malham Village in North Yorkshire.

If you want to learn about the history and heritage of the Dales, the Countryside Museum in Hawes will be right up your alley. The Yorkshire Dales has a fascinating history which you can see in action in places like Bolton Castle, in Wensleydale,  Skipton Castle and other riveting ruins including Fountains Abbey in Ripon, a world heritage site.

This house was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (the mastermind behind St Paul’s Cathedral). Newby Hall is a great place for the whole family, there’s plenty for adults to marvel over and a miniature railway that the kids will love.

Ooh, I love Yorkshire. I think the reason I get along so well with the UK in general is because the rain doesn’t bother me. I didn’t get to hike at all the last time I was there, but I’d love to give it a try on my next visit!
