In a 2013 Lonely Planet poll, Yorkshire was voted the third best holiday destination, not just in the county but in the world. Unsurprisingly, Yorkshire born and bred residents were feeling pretty happy about their homeland. So although there’s no need to persuade you that Yorkshire is a brilliant place to visit, there’s no harm celebrating it a bit, is there? I thought not. Let’s start our celebration of all things Yorkshire with the Yorkshire Dales.
When you think of the Yorkshire Dales it’s easy to conjure images of green rolling hills and the occasional sheep. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a dedicated area of outstanding natural beauty and the towns and villages surrounding the national park are a fabulous getaway for walkers, cyclists, sight-seeing tourists or those looking for a quiet romantic break.
Calling Walkers, Ramblers and Cyclists
If you can’t sit still, a Yorkshire Dales holiday is just the ticket. There is a plethora of outdoor action going on for you, especially if you love walking and cycling. There is a fantastic connection of footpaths for you to step or roll down, all with unbeatable views.
Bring your wellies or boots if you’re walking, while blessed with stunning scenery, Yorkshire isn’t always graced with stunning weather. (But hey, that’s what keeps it green). If you’re really up for a workout, you can do the three peaks Yorkshire Challenge. While you’re in the area a little donation to support the National Park conservation is a great way to show your appreciation. (And you get a cool T-shirt too).
Attractions in the Dales
Don’t forget to pack your camera, you’ll need it in this fantastic region. Natural attractions include local wildlife, rolling countryside and natural wonders like Malham Cove, the famous limestone cliff just North of Malham Village in North Yorkshire.
If you want to learn about the history and heritage of the Dales, the Countryside Museum in Hawes will be right up your alley. The Yorkshire Dales has a fascinating history which you can see in action in places like Bolton Castle, in Wensleydale, Skipton Castle and other riveting ruins including Fountains Abbey in Ripon, a world heritage site.
If beautiful architecture pushes your buttons, there are a number of stately homes you can visit, including Newby Hall near Rippon. This house was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (the mastermind behind St Paul’s Cathedral). Newby Hall is a great place for the whole family, there’s plenty for adults to marvel over and a miniature railway that the kids will love.
Romantic Breaks in the Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales are full of towns and villages that are perfect for a couple’s escape.
Ashfield House in Grassington is a 5* grade two listed property that was designed to be a relaxing haven for adults. This delightful B&B is a beautiful place to hideaway from the world, with gorgeous rooms, delectable dining and a gorgeous country setting.
The Castle House Boutique Bed and Breakfast in Richmond oozes romance. Stretch out in a luxurious four poster bed, soak to your heart’s content in your free standing luxury bath or splash out and get a whole suite for you and your someone special to enjoy.
Flowery Dell Luxury Pine Lodges, just outside of Richmond, are an exclusive break in a peaceful valley. Be at one with nature without leaving civilisation behind, your lodge is fully heated, your bed is made and waiting and some lodges even come with a hot tub. How’s that for steamy?
Poppy Cottage in Ellingstring is a wonderful way to escape everyone but each other. Fully equipped and self contained, this self catering property has everything you need to hide away from the world. Hollybreen Guest House bed and breakfast is right next door and offers guests R & R while taking care of them, there are only three guest rooms so you can be sure of a quiet stay with stunning Dales views.
There you have it, a slice of Yorkshire Dales for everyone. Next we’ll be looking to the wonderful world of West Yorkshire, you won’t want to miss it.

Ooh, I love Yorkshire. I think the reason I get along so well with the UK in general is because the rain doesn’t bother me. I didn’t get to hike at all the last time I was there, but I’d love to give it a try on my next visit!
